De Zerbi Wants Tottenham to Keep Spending After Savio Move

Roberto De Zerbi has told Tottenham’s Premier League rivals that the club has no intention of slowing down in the transfer market after another major signing pushed their summer spending beyond £300 million.

Tottenham completed the £85 million arrival of Savio from Manchester City, making him the latest high-profile addition to a squad being rebuilt during the first summer of the post-Daniel Levy era.

The spending comes despite a disappointing start to the Premier League season, with Tottenham suffering a heavy defeat to Brentford in their opening match.

For De Zerbi, however, the result has not changed his view that Spurs need to continue investing if they want to challenge England’s biggest clubs.

De Zerbi: Tottenham Should Not Be Afraid to Spend

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Carabao Cup second-round match against Charlton, De Zerbi dismissed the idea that the club should feel pressure because of its transfer spending.

Instead, the Tottenham boss suggested he would be happy to see the club spend even more if the right opportunities become available.

“I don’t feel pressure about the transfer market. If I can, I want to spend more money again without problems.”

De Zerbi believes Tottenham cannot afford to fall behind clubs such as Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal if they want to compete for major trophies.

The manager also pointed to the spending power of other Premier League sides as a reason why Tottenham should be comfortable investing heavily in their own squad.

A £300m-Plus Summer

Savio’s £85 million move has taken Tottenham’s spending this summer beyond the £300 million mark.

The scale of the investment represents a major statement from the club as it begins a new era following Levy’s departure.

However, spending heavily does not automatically guarantee success.

Tottenham’s opening-day defeat to Brentford showed that De Zerbi still has work to do to turn the new-look squad into a team capable of challenging consistently at the top of the Premier League.

The manager appears to believe that further investment could be part of the solution.

De Zerbi Sets His Sights on Trophies

Despite the pressure surrounding Tottenham, De Zerbi insists his biggest concern is not the money being spent but whether the club can eventually compete for silverware.

He admitted that working at a club of Tottenham’s size creates pressure, but described that pressure as motivation to help the team reach the highest level.

“I feel pressure because I am working in one of the best clubs in the world and I would like to help this club to compete to win the titles,” De Zerbi said.

He added that he does not know whether Tottenham will reach that level this season or next season, but winning trophies remains his personal objective.

Tottenham’s Next Test

Tottenham will have an immediate opportunity to respond to their disappointing league opener when they face Charlton in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The match gives De Zerbi another chance to assess his expensive new squad and potentially give some of his summer arrivals more time on the pitch.

With more than £300 million already spent and the manager openly willing to spend again, Tottenham’s transfer activity is likely to remain one of the major talking points around the club.

For Spurs supporters, the bigger question is now whether the money can translate into results.
